See the Ubuntu release and end-of-life schedule for dates extending back to 4.10. Once a release reaches end-of-life, no more security updates are created. People who don't upgrade to supported releases remain at risk of exposure to security vulnerabilities.

Thats right. Currently 10.04 (LTS), 11.04, 11.10. and 12.04 (LTS) are the only supported versions. The OP should install one of these version in order to keep their system safe.

    Hi Steve...

So there will be no updates for the OP of any kind?

    Regards...

    Hi all...

It's possible that the only way to install it would be to burn a copy to CD. However, because of the USN 612-1 vulnerability and the probability that updates are no longer available for 7.10, it might be better if you just bypassed it and went straight to 8.04, if at all possible. As Steve has mentioned, 8.04 is still in the archives, so updates that were made for it along with other software should still be available for it.

    Regards...

If you have the graphical package manager open, you need to close it. You can only have one instance of apt running. If you don't have the graphical package manager running, then remove the identified lock file:
    Code:
    sudo rm [COLOR=#3E3E3E]/var/lib/apt/lists/lock[/COLOR]
and then retry running the update.
