HP Scanjet 3970 and Kooka (SOLVED)!!!

I know my subject scanner is not supported (yet) in Kubuntu, but I was wondering who, if anyone, is working on this issue and what progress is being made. I'd even be interested in being a tester if or when one is needed.

This thread is closed as I have taken the recommendations and solved this issue. My HP Scanjet 3970 works great under Kooka! Thank you to all who contributed.
