    Problems with viewing DVD movies.

    Someone can say the topic is not new, but I was looking carefully for some support in topics already written and didn't find any solution or even similar problem.

    And the problem is I can't watch DVD movies. Well, the movie starts, there are some law notifications, then commercials (you can hear them) and then the DVDs menu (with music playing as well). But in those 3 situations the image consists only of very much horizontal lines, it's distorted hardly with these lines. I suppose the whole movie would look like this, but I'm even unable to hit to "start" button in the DVDs menu.

    I face this problem using Kaffeine, gxine as well, and the Mplayer says it can't open the selected video out driver (I set dxr3).

    I've read this instruction: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3086749, and have installed all this stuff but the problem still arises. I've also installed regionset and checked my region, but it seems to meet the requirements of the movie (there is region 2 set in my OS and it's also mentioned on the DVD box or cover or how-else-you-call-it).

    PS. Sorry for my grammar and vocabulary, but I'm Pole and can't translate all of my thoughts accurately into English.

    EDIT: I forgot to specify my OS - I use Feisty. It's the first time after installing it that I wanted to play a DVD movie. Previously I was a user of Dapper Drake and there wasn't such problem.

    I would check:


    1) Hardware/ Hardware settings

    Xorg.0.log is log file for X Windowing Server. It is in /var/log/.

    K > System > KSystemLog

    Just looking errors:

    The X video extension, often abbreviated as XVideo or Xv, is a video output mechanism for the X Window System. Its main use today is to rescale video playback in hardware (namely in the hardware of the graphics card), in order to enlarge a given video or to watch it in full screen mode. Without XVideo, this scaling would have to be done in software, which is possible but requires a considerable amount of processing power, sometimes to the point of slowing down/degrading the video stream.

    2) What programs tell:

    Start Kaffeine(xine)/mplayer/VLC in the konsole -> there should be information what is wrong.

    If you get something like:

    if you are using VLC:

    -H, --longhelp print help for VLC and all it's modules (can be combined with --advanced)

    -v, --verbose <integer> Verbosity (0,1,2)

      when starting in the konsole (kaffeine and mplayer) it gives:
      X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 167
      Major opcode: 144
      Minor opcode: 3
      Resource id: 0x0

        well, before I started editing xorg.conf I noticed that kaffeine crashes everytime I want to play something (e.g. audio CD)
        I started it via konsole and got the error quoted above in my previous post

        so i followed the instructions given, edited xorg.conf, restarted X...
        ...and the problem is still there. kaffeine crashes when I try to make it play a CD or DVD.
        here's what I get:

        Reading this I suppose kaffeine has problem with loading xine engine (am I right?), but I have no idea what to do

            wow! removing those files worked for me!
            kaffeine starts and plays at least audio cd's
            the problem I pointed out when starting this topic still arises. it plays dvd, but has problem with viewing image properly...

            but i'm glad anyway! i can listen to my cd's again

              If you litterally used the instructions on the above link, you will have problems. That specific link/reply was by a member using Gutsy. You are running Feisty. I wrote the instructions on getting Commercial DVDs to play in Kaffeine in Feisty, so I know it works, and others have reported success following those instructions as well.

              You need to go here and follow those instructions exactly. Do so, and you will be able to play commercial DVDs in Kaffeine.

                  I'm running Kubuntu Gutsy (installed from LiveCD last night). I followed my own instructions from that HOWTO and had commercial DVD playback right away. It does work.

                      Bottom line is you need all of the following packages installed in Feisty to get commercial DVD playback:
                      libdvdread3
                      libdvdcss2
                      w32codecs
                      libxine1-console
                      libxine1-ffmpeg
                      libxine1-gnome
                      libxine1-kde
                      Open Adept Manager and ensure that these packages are installed.
