or, if I log out and have beryl not running, then open up konsole and try to start it again, I get an error message saying something like "could not load _____ this should not happen" and then I cant copy and/or past or type and the windows decorator vanishes

I recall going through a similar situation when I had an Edgy installation. Beryl is more stable now than it was then, but it is still slightly flaky. I don't know what to recommend except maybe remove-purge it, remove-purge your video driver, and start over by installing your video driver, verifying that glx is good to go, and then install Beryl again. I know that's very clunky and sounds more like Win-World than Linux, but there's some interaction going and the 3D acceleration part of your driver isn't playing nice when controlled by Beryl. Sorry I can't offer something more elegant ... :P

lol. Didnt want to have to resort to such a thing after getting it all as I liked it, but if its guaranteed to work then I guess its worth it.

Guess theres no other way of troubleshooting I can do first then?

p.s. when you say purge, is that different to just removing and re-installing? (because I've done that via adept already)

You know I vaguely recall seeing that same "dbus" thing 6 or 8 months ago while wrestling Beryl into my Edgy system. Google that error message and I bet you'll find some things to try. I think you're getting close to a breakthrough!

saw that second one, my default is already 24bit :\

btw, here is my xorg.conf file

I noticed a lot of removed metamodes which I think happened when I was playing about trying to get my tv to work. I've tried just deleting the lines, but that just nerfs it all up and I need to load the backup.

I noticed that when I used the Nvidia utility to write my xorg.conf, it set up metamodes, and things have worked marvelously since then. So, you might want to experiment with re-instating the metamode that seems best for your system.

If you have an Nvidia driver installed, get into the Konsole and enter

Code:

sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite

That will overwrite xorg.conf and (hopefully) set up the correct metamodes for your card. Probably you should back up the xorg.conf file that you have now, in case things get worse, before doing this little bit of brain surgery ....

Then restart your xserver with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.
