adept_installer giving me a strange error...

Adept installer is giving me the following error.

Another process is using the packaging system database (probably some other Adept application or apt-get or aptitude). Please close the other application before using this one.

I know what this means, I just don't know which process to quit and what I did to cause this. I tried rebooting but since this saves my state what ever process must have started again. Could someone also throw in how to restart without saving open apps etc. I know how to turn that off, but I didn't know if there was a way to do it once for just one reboot.

The last thing I did was use adept_installer to install a bunch of Java stuff. I (accidentally) didn't agree to the first EULA I was showed but everything else went fine. I went back in to try to install the Java part that I didn't agree to (don't know which it was) and I got this error. Following is a list of all of my running processes please let me know which to kill.

    tom@tomputer:~$ ps -Aww

Thanks for your help. I new to Linux, but have been using computers for a very long time, so feel free to get technical, I'll appreciate any useful info on this anyone can give.

Re: adept_installer giving me a strange error...

    For starters, you may try:

    Code:
    ROOT # dpkg --configure --pending
and, if this failed, as well:

    Code:
    ROOT # dpkg --audit
I dare to say that you're being "blocked" not by a process "on the run" but by a lock file of sorts which may or may not have become stale ... anyway, as proven by a lot of posts, trying to install Java through Adept is really not a good idea - use Synaptic or, even better, APT/DPKG directly (read: without graphical interface) to get things going ...

Thanks, the first suggestion worked. Looks like I made a bit of a Linux noob mistake. I've been using OS X's command line and some SSH stuff for a long time now, just goes to show that this is a whole new ball game. Glad you guys are here to help.

          Try:

          Code:
          sudo dpkg --configure --pending
          ~$sudo make me a sandwich
