    Re: KDE Unable to start

I have experienced the exact problem described by cjordan. Not lately, thankfully, but perhaps a year ago, running Feisty, or maybe it was Edgy. It is in the general family of "permissions" problems, caused by operations done while logged in as root, which somehow affected the contents of the /home/cjordan directory, probably the .kde contents. Unfortunately the solution didn't make enough of an impression on me to remember it clearly today, but I think nuking the .kde directory may fix it, and avoiding the temptation to "be root" when you don't have to be is the way to prevent a recurrence.

All my doubts have disappeared. A quick
      Code:
      echo $HOME
was all that was needed - doh!
