How do I Load/Activate a Saitek X45 USB Joystick and Throttle Combo???

I've DL and installed the Joystick Calibrator and created a file for my JS. The input was found at /dev/input/js0 using dmesg. The calibration program has access to the JS, but that's about it. Other JS-enabled programs either can't "see" the JS or can't use it. The really strange thing is according to the calibration program, Button 12 is always being depressed, but none of the buttons are being activated. Please advise.
