Why does "open with" not remember file associations

I'm trying to get .avi files to open with "movie player" instead of "kaffene" (which just plays noise". I select "open with", "other", then select "movie player" and click "remember application association for this type of file". It shows me a dialog and progress bar that says "updating system configuration".

But, the next time I click on a .avi file, it will again try to open it in kaffene.

Can anyone explain what I'm doing wrong?

if you right click on an avi file, select properties, then click the tool icon just to the right of the file type description, you can rearrange the order, if there is more than one app, you can move your preferred app to the top
