Nvidia driver fails to start with updated kernel

Whenever I update the ubuntu kernel (in this case going from 2.6.15-26-k7 to 2.6.15-27-k7), the Nvidia driver fails to initialize and I cannot start X. I know it's probably some simple setting in the xorg.conf, but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Everything starts up fine when booting to the -26 kernel.

    What should I do?

I believe that you have to put the nvidia drivers on top of the kernel...
that means each time you update the kernel, you have to re-install the drivers...
that is unless you use nvidia-glx... this way, you wont have any problems...

i am not an expert but thats what i have read about the subject...

Thanks, someguy. I figured it was something like that.

The problem is that I have no idea how to install the nvidia driver properly from the command prompt. Is there some way I can get into the desktop environment; bypassing the nvidia drivers?

How would I force X to use the vesa driver rather than the nvidia one during boot?

        reconfigure X
        sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

i believe that is the command...

Thanks again, someguy. I just used that command to force it to use the vesa driver (the "nv" kernel driver doesn't work on my machine for some reason) then I was able to get into X and use Automatix to install the latest nvidia driver.

Now everything's back up and working perfectly with the new kernel, even XGL/Compiz!
