    curious about updates

I have just been notified (little red triangle) that 8 updates were available.
    Naturally I updated.
There are many thousands of applications in the repositories; but my comp. has only a couple of thousand(?).
How does the updater know which?
i.e. it may say that there are 8 updates available but perhaps only one of them applies to an app that is on my computer (or none).
    Thanks

    Re: curious about updates

In the guts of your Debian Linux distribution aka Kubuntu, is the Debian Package system, aka dpkg. The little triangle is the Adept Notifier, which if you click it will run the Adept Updater. Adept Manager is one of the 2 most popular GUI front-ends for dpkg, the other one being Synaptic.

Then there is also the text-mode (command line) front-end, which is apt-get.

And here is everything else you could ever want to know about your Debian package management system, thanks to Rog131:
