    Text display problem

    Hi,

I am a brand new linux user, currently getting used to Dapper Drake on a Dell Inspiron 6000 (can give specs if needed). Whilst I am loving the logic of everything compared to MS I am having trouble with one issue.

In aMule and VLC all of the text is replaced with rectangles. In Windows I am pretty sure I would be able to fix it, but in linux I am utterly clueless. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a screen capture of what I am talking about. http://www.safeselfprotection.com/images/screenshot.jpg

    Many Thanks

    Oz

You could try to start VLC in the konsole with verbose option:
    Code:
    vlc --verbose=2
    Maybe it tells something useful.

    More: vlc --longhelp
-H, --longhelp print help for VLC and all it's modules (can
    be combined with --advanced)

    -v, --verbose <integer> Verbosity (0,1,2)
    Before you edit, BACKUP !

You should create this file by running pango-querymodules.

        Re: Text display problem

On checking it seems I really don't have a 'etc/pango/pango.modules' so I uninstalled and reinstalled Pango with no effect. I then tried 'update-pango-modules' and got this

Updating the modules list for Pango-1.5.0...done.
cp: cannot create regular file `/var/lib/pango/pango.modules': Permission denied
So any ideas how I get round this?

          Re: Text display problem

          I am a fool.

I tried again with sudo and reinstalled VLC and aMUle and everything is fine now.

          Thanks very much
