    Problem Starting X (Resolved)

    Hello Forums.....

Long time no need, but man when I do the community always comes thru, so I am hoping you do now.

Yesterday I was doing an update and the power crashed while updating and computer shut down while installing a virtual box update.

Started up the computer today and this is what I get.

the kubuntu loading bar comes up then goes to command prompt login.
I logged in and tried to startx, didnt work got an error message.
So I dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and reset everything, that all goes well and I get back to command prompt. I try startx, this is the error message I get and have not been able to figure out what to do next. any input would help.

    Re: Problem Starting X

Wow -- if that's the only problem, then you're lucky! It looks like xorg.conf is in a state of disagreement with your loaded graphics modules.

I take it that when you ran the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg script, you had it auto-detect your Nvidia chip, and then went ahead with it that way? You might be able to fix this by running the script again, but this time tell it "no" to autodetect, and on the second screen choose "VESA" as the display type. Then finish the script the same as you did before. When you startx this time, it won't be the nice Nvidia graphics, but you'll get a GUI.

Next you will need to remove the Nvidia driver, or MAYBE if you simply re-install it, it will overwrite the prior installation. If you used the nvidia-glx package, you probably can simply mark it for removal, re-start the X server, open Adept again and mark it for installation. If you used the proprietary driver, it may be a little more complicated, but the idea is the same -- delete the prior installation and re-install the driver.

Finally, you may need to edit xorg.conf to substitute "nvidia" as the driver.

        Re: Problem Starting X (Resolved)

I have the same problem described above, but cannot get into adept to remove the driver. I've already tried to alter the X.config file as described but it does not allow startx to work.

        Please help

OK, I'm into the GUI thanks to changing the X.org driver to vesa. Panic over, perhaps.

Alas, now I've reconfigured Xorg.config keyboard isn't working and kde windows are no longer draggable - they lack the top bar

            any help?

              Stranger and stranger

              to summarise
I shut down my PC having freshly added Nvidia drivers and Beryl

It restarted saying that it could not open X

I changed my xorg.conf file to vesa driver. Problem remains

I changed it again to vesa driver. GUI restarts, but crippled

I changed it again to nvidia driver. GUI restarts perfectly and Beryl runs

I restart it again. Problem above remains

I changed xorg.conf file to vesa driver. GUI restarts as it did this morning, prior to nvidia.

Anyone have the faintest idea what's going on?

                Re: Problem Starting X (Resolved)

Problem recurs with the latest driver. But thankfully I've operated on the guts of xorg enough times to rectify the situation immediately. I've e-mailed nvidia about this.

Sorry for these posts, being a newbie to linux I'm still hoping that it will 'just work'
