adept and apt-get not connecting all of the time

hello, I am still having network problems with my new install of dapper drake. I turned off ipv6 in Firefox and now fire fox mostly works, but there have been a few times where it only brings up a gray screen for a page that know should work, then later it brings it up with a refresh. But the main problem is that adept and apt-get is not working consistently. I had some friends over on Saturday and was showing them how easy it is to install software in Linux and much to my frustration, it would not work. The next day I could update with no problem. Now it is not working again even after restarting the computer. When I use apt-get, I get this message:
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the list directory
The other related issue is in Thunderbird where two of my email accounts associated with one server seem to work fine but the third, associated with another server won't connect at all. (it will connect in kmail, but I can't get kmail to send)

Please, I need really clear instructions for what to do to solve this issue.

    Thank you,

    Jason

Re: adept and apt-get not connecting all of the time

Usually it means that there's another process trying to upgrade... But it also can mean that you're not using sudo.
To be sure that no other process is updating sources, show the file :
    Code:
    ls -l /var/lib/apt/lists/lock
If it exist and is newer than your last reboot, so a process is updating, if not, it can be a bug that the file was not removed after last shutdown... Then delete it.

    Hope it helps

sky's advice for apt-get is good. As for your email issue, there are some things to check. First off, what kind of email account is it, POP or IMAP? Does it require a secure connection? (SSL/TLS). How does it fail to work? (Permission denied? Silent failure?)

I haven't used Kmail in a long time, but I would think it is configured in a very similar way to Thunderbird, and that means that the outgoing mail server is configured in a separate step. As a caveat, note that Thunderbird has the following warning on the 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)' screen of the 'Account Settings' window:

Although you can specify more than one outgoing server (SMTP), this is only recommended for advanced users. Setting up multiple SMTP servers can cause errors when sending messages.
so if you can get one gateway configured for outgoing mail, maybe you should just stick with that.

Re: adept and apt-get not connecting all of the time

Thank you Sky, I tried your suggestion and this is what I got:

        Code:
        -rw-r----- 1 root root 0 2007-03-23 20:04 /var/lib/apt/lists/lock
So I haven't rebooted for a couple days and that seems to be giving the current time and date. How do I stop it? delete it?

          Hi,

No in fact you shouldn't delete this file, are you sure you're using sudo ? Can you give the exact command you're typing in please ?
          like : sudo apt-get update

          Cheers

            First try I got this:
            Code:
            seawing@seawing-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get update
            Password:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the list directory
Then I tried again and I got this:
            Code:
            seawing@seawing-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get update
            Password:

Kmail is only set up for a comparison (and so I can get mail from that address) but I actually cant send SMTP from kmail or Thunderbird.

Here is the weird thing...I did nothing to change anything, not even a reboot, and now adept can fetch all the packages and apt-get can update. but I still can't send email or recieve to that one account in Tbird.
