    Why bluetooth / required?

I get that bluetooth is enabled by default for a better out of box experience.

However, I have no bluetooth. Moreover, removing bluetooth items from the install list removes core components. That interrelationship seems a little, bizarre.

How do I remove bluetooth functionality without losing kubuntu entirely?

You can remove bluetooth stuff, the only "system" component I see it removing is kubuntu-desktop, which is simply a meta-package that is basically a list of the dependencies that make up Kubuntu. It is safe to remove, but do make sure you reinstall that package before performing any upgrades (not updates) so you get any new things added to future versions of the OS.

Thanks, but removing bluetooth, then reinstalling kubuntu-desktop simply brings the bluetooth stuff back again. <sigh>

Only reinstall kubuntu-desktop at upgrade time
