Sound problems in 6.10 after clean install

I did an upgrade from 5.10 to 6.06 and my sound card continued to work. I then did a clean install of 6.10 to a new partition and the sound does not work afterwards. Is this normal? What can I do to get my sound back? (Sorry if I'm comparing pears to apples.)

My sound card is a Creative Labs SB Live 5.1, in a Dell 4600.

    Thanks in advance.

Did you have a look at

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

    or

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/De...gSoundProblems

I guess you have to bring up the levels. Open Konsole and type "alsamixer", you can move in the mixer with the cursor and the Tab keys.
Or maybe you have 2 soundcards (a onboard card?)? Maybe linux is using the other card for playback?

Re: Sound problems in 6.10 after clean install

I read the info in both those sites. Both aplay -l and lspci -v "see" my sound cards, (0) Intel ICH5 and (1) Audigy 2 Audigy ZS, on both the 606 and 610 systems. I turned everything on in (unmute) in alsamixer, to no avail. Then I noticed in lspci -v that on the 610 system, the cards were marked <access denied>, whereas in 606 they were <available only to root>. What does this mean?

Also, in System Settings, I tried both autodetect and ALSA. Sometimes, not always, in applying ALSA, the status indicator showed that the restart of the sound system was looping. What's this?

I admit I'm stymied here. Any help appreciated.

Since this problem really concerns Edgy, I've moved it there:
