[c] Installed Kubuntu but it didn't rewrite grub?

I had Ubuntu installed, and tried to move from Kubuntu from there... but I couldn't find the page that details that... so, here I am.

I downloaded a Kubuntu CD, and it loaded fine.  Installation was a breeze, reformatted my /boot and / partitions, set up where I wanted things mounted, it copied files, etc and so forth.

When I restart and boot from the first drive (which is another problem, I installed on my SATA but it wrote grub to my first IDE drive (/dev/hda) instead of /dev/sda.  However, the Kubuntu install didn't seem to overwrite the old configuration that Ubuntu had set up for grub.  When I boot, I still see "Ubuntu", "Ubuntu recovery mode" and my "Windows XP Professional" option.  Should these now say "Kubuntu" if it was updated properly?

So as it stands now, I can only boot into Windows, or the LiveCD.  If I choose "Ubuntu" it seems to boot find (all text, no graphical display) and then dumps be at a command prompt "#root@bravopc: ".

Any ideas?  Should I try to reinstall?  I've seen some posts here that suggest editing the grub configuration file from the LiveCD?

    Thanks in advance.

    EDIT:

    Additionally, my system is:

    AMD Athlon XP 2800+
    1GB RAM
    Gigabyte 7n400 pro2 motherboard
    GeForceFX 5500
    /dev/hda = 80gb WD
    /dev/hdb = 120gb Seagate
    /dev/sda = 80gb SATA WD

WinXP, Ubuntu, and my /home /boot and swap are all on the SATA drive.

Ubuntu nor Kubuntu installations wrote grub to the MBR on /dev/sda.  I know this because when I boot from it I still get my LILO menu from my old Gentoo install.

    Edit2:

Ok, I'm at home now for my lunch break. I booted again and it booted me to the prompt. I am root. I typed "startx" and it loaded KDE, got the Kubuntu splash during initializing the X session too. So, what gives? Why am I root? Why didn't the install work properly? Any ideas?

Sorry - I'm a bit lost Is your grub now working? (Your menu will still say Ubuntu - not very polished I'm afraid - but you can edit the menu yourself to say what you want) Is it that you find yourself starting at a console (init 3) as root thats the problem? Does kde come up normally at startx? If so, perhaps you just need to set your init level to 5 and add yourself as a user. I'm rather hesitant to suggest such simple things because as you've installed Gentoo you obviously know your way around! Sorry if I've misunderstood you.
