duel booting

    duel booting

    Hi
    I have just installed kubuntu 6.06 on my second drive with xp on my first drive. My problem is that I cannot now boot into windows. I have tried to run grub using the Run Command from the start menu but this did not work!
    Any ideas?

    I used SuSe for a few weeks and the duel booting worked well with that distro.

    eeeeh, duel booting, that's tricky, last time I saw the fight Kubuntu won...

    But I'm sure you mean dual booting:

    So, your in kubuntu, edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst to add windows (I'm sure someone will come in with more details, since I can't use kubuntu atm), it should be something like:
    Code:
    title Windows
root (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1
    note: to edit the file, do:
    Code:
    kdesu kwrite /boot/grub/menu.lst


    Also, try:
    Code:
    sudo cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst.backup
sudo update-grub
    I'm about 10% sure update-grub is a command.

      Thanks for the reply, sorry about the typo.
      I have tried what you suggested without any joy, when I type in the code to edit the file I get this

      I have installed Automatix and noticed that it comes with a Boot-up Manager,
      do you know if that would work?

        hmm Nirvana is absolutely correct although you don't need to do the grub update thing. Your problem now seems to be you cant edit the menu.lst file. try another way

        kdesu konqueror
        Then navigate to /boot/grub You should see the file menu.lst. doubleclick it or whatever to open it. Then go to the bottom of the file and add Nirvana's code above the code that boots kubuntu. Then save the file and reboot - all should be well. If not, repost and we'll sort it out. Dual booting with Kubuntu is (in my experience) trickier than with SuSe but is very do-able

          i have setup many multi boot systems and the best advice i can offer is to install the M$ OS first, then let kubuntu or your other flavor of linux overwrite the master boot record with GRUB, as linux tends to play better with windose than the other way around.

          as mentioned, post again if you still have issues and we'll take a hack at getting you up and running : )

              Yes! You got it. Do it exactly where you said You could also comment out those old kernel options you don't need if you get really ambitious. Then you won't see them in your startup menu

                Hi
                Thanks to all who replied, I regret to say that after afew more setbacks I have given up with Kubuntu and reverted to SuSe, BUT I will try again. I am going to buy a external HD, load Kubuntu onto that and see how I get on.
