    Rather bare install

    Hi all,

I'm kind of new with Ubuntu, so please be patient. I've installed Kubuntu today on one of my systems, and during install was not asked what software I wanted to install above just the base. There is no support for any development. Do I have to install every single utility/compiler/source/library etc through apt ? That is a very tedious procedure, and kind of error-prone.

    Yes and no.

Yes, you will install through apt/aptitude/adept/synaptic.

    No, there are metapackages.

    Two examples:

    buld-essential:
This package contains an informational list of packages which are
considered essential for building Debian packages. This package also
depends on the packages on that list, to make it easy to have the
    build-essential packages installed.
    kde-devel
This metapackage includes official KDE modules that are useful to developers,
including KDE's software development kit (SDK), Qt3's designer tool, and all
core KDE header and development packages.
    Before you edit, BACKUP !
