So i mounted the CD and stuck it in my Dell Inspiron 6400.

I get the common bin/sh cant access tty problem, ive tried installing with driver update cd option as this has worked for some but not for me.

I started and removed quiet splash which i thought could be of use for someone who could help, heres whats displayed:

I installed kubuntu alternate on my old PC

        P3-450 RAM 128

The installation was successful but after you start the PC it will load for a while but the monitor would shut off and I cant tell whether my CPU hung or not

          Hi,

I guess it's trouble with video, you should try to press <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<F1>, then login and then you're sure that there's trouble with video.
What card do you own in this machine ?

          Good luck

In fact you should try to get it to work but I'm not sure if it's possible to get 3D acceleration or even good support with this kind of card...
First in this mode, you should try to find which driver you're using by this command :
                Code:
                grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Then post it here in reply.

Anyway you can try to reconfigure your display by this command :
                Code:
                sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
When it's done, try to restart your display by :
                Code:
                sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart
                And check how it's going...

                Hope it helps

On the first question when it asks if you want to auto-detect the video chip, answer "NO". On the second screen, pick "VESA" for the display type.
