    glxgears

I can run glxgears and they move, but there is no listing of frame rates.

    What can I do?

OK, now this is truly weird! Is it possible that the gears graphic is exactly on top of the window that is reporting the frame rate? Can you grab it and pull it aside, to check?

Brilliant - thank you, that did it:

          he@kubuntu188:~$ glxgears -printfps
          5319 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1063.631 FPS
          4557 frames in 5.0 seconds = 911.362 FPS
          5350 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1069.962 FPS
          5370 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1073.888 FPS
          5370 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1073.967 FPS
