app timeout in 18.10

I use variety to display wallpapers. In 18.04 it work perfectly. In 18.10, when reading from my server, the screen greys for a sec every 15-30 secs. It seems to me the application timeout (I may be using wrong terminology here) where plasma will detect a hung app, is much sorter. The app actually isnt hung, just busy. Is there a way to adjust this timeout to something more reasonable? I looked all in settings and could not find a setting for it. Now i may have completely missed it, but I spent a couple of hours hunting the setting down. This was an upgrade from 18.04 to 18.10.

Ideas?
