Thinkpad X201 stuck in emergency mode

    I'm still new to Linux.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X201, with a Samsung 850 EVO SSD, and 8GB RAM.

It just booted into emergency mode, where it was stuck for several reboots.

It booted into the GUI after I opened fstab in vi, without changing anything.

I suspect a file system problem and would like to sort it out before it gets me again.

I ran fsck but there were a bunch of busy items and I don't believe it did anything.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Here are some screenshots I took with my phone:

      Run
      Code:
      df -h /tmp
and post the results here in a CODE box.

I have no particular expertise, but no-one else has replied, so...
        ...UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY: RUN fsck MANUALLY.
That's not good; it suggests there's problems that need manual decisions. Running fsck on a file system you're booted into is problematic.

I would boot in recovery mode, if possible. If you don't see a grub menu that has the recovery option, hold down the shift key during the boot. Recovery mode has a fsck option, but I've never had to use it.

Or, boot from a live USB; I keep a systemrescuecd USB that's good for problem situations.

If you have data you don't want to lose, copying it off somehow would be the first thing. Then, if you've still got trouble, a reinstall might be the quickest way forward. A fsck might fix the problems in the file system, but Kubuntu might be screwed up. I would try to test the drive for hardware errors, too.
        Regards, John Little

            Thank you for helping!

I may end up just reinstalling. It’s only a week old. Which makes this very frustrating, as I only got my applications configured 2 days ago.

Is there a preferred Linux utility for checking drive health?
