USB cdrom drive won't write to DVD

I have a USB cdrom drive that won't seem to write to DVDs. It does write to CD-RW disks, and it is advertised to write to DVD+R and DVD-R (I have tried both), but it won't, at least not using K3b. The internal CDROM drive in this computer is pretty much useless at this point, so I need to get the external drive working.

Note: this is the "hp DVD A DS8A5LH" device.

It is crashing with the messages:
unable to WRITE@LBA=0h: Input/output error
mkisofs crashed.

Here is the line from /etc/fstab for mounting the device:
/dev/sr1 /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 rw,user,unhide,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

Also k3b says it was built without the "permissions helper"; this came from the repositories, that's disappointing.

Anyone have experience with this?

i've had problems with k3b for awhile now. So I just installed xfburn and it's working fine. Give it a try.

I tired xfburn. It works with the internal drive as expected, but segfaults with the USB drive.
Maybe the USB drive is just defective, but I really do suspect mounting problems. The only medium it will write to is CD-RW; everything else crashes, even though the drive is supposed to write to just about anything. Funny, as the internal drive (when it works) writes to everything EXCEPT CD-RW.
