Kate: automatic spell checking still not working?

I went through the whole 15.10 release without having automatic spell checking working in Kate. It used to work in releases before then. But it's still not working now that I have 16.04 installed.

To be exact, if I select "Tools -> Spelling -> Spelling..." then it WILL jump to the next typo and come up with the expected replace/ignore dialog at the bottom of the Kate screen. But what is not working is the automatic underlining (with a red squiggly line) of typos as I type. I do have "Tools -> Spelling -> Automatic Spell Checking" checked.

Looking around, I see quite a lot of other people have similar issues, but it does seem to work for others.

(Maybe or maybe not related, I'm also getting the LinearGradient errors reported in https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showth...nt-quot-errors)

Is anyone aware of a fix for this?

Okay, I have finally figured out what the problem is.

I have switched my default system font to Liberation Sans, and the problem with Kate spell-check highlighting turns out to be purely a font issue. If I change font in the Kate settings (e.g. to Noto Mono), then the spell-check highlighting reappears.

Thanks to https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=343313#c21 for the hint.
