Files with Chinese characters 'don't exist'

When I try to open a file whose name contains Chinese characters and which is displayed correctly in Dolphin, I'm told that the file doesn't exist. I can still delete it in Dolphin but opening always gets the same error. What could be causing this?

What kind of files? I just tried with plain text files and it worked fine.

I assume you're trying to open it in Dolphin by clicking or double-clicking there.

Conceivably, the name is a symbolic link to a file that doesn't exist. (In my dolphin such links are shown in italics, I wonder what is done for Chinese, maybe a slanted font?)

If you right-click the file name in dolphin, and select properties, what does it say for the type? Is there a "Points to" item in the properties?
