    Hard hang/freeze after installing

    Hello

I recently installed Kubuntu 16.04. Had some issues when upgrading from 14.04.. for some reason when I left upgrading overnight the session locked and could not get back... so I lost that and had to reinstall from scratch... never mind. Luckily I had everything backed up.
I reinstalled my system using a USB stick. I had to try at least three times because in the first two tries for some reason it didn't finish. Finally I got it installed (I did some changes in partition since I have a dual boot with Win7 which is installed in sda1/2..).
Anyway after finishing installation everything looked good but as I started using it my machine started hanging -completely. I'm not able to ctrl-alt-F1 or anything-. Seems to be random, when trying to open Mozilla, or when looking for programs in Discovery... For example I clicked on system updates (I had >400Mb in updates), I left it updating overnight, and it didn't freeze. But then I installed Chromium and when navigating to some page it did.
Can somebody help see what's going on? maybe taking a look at my logs?
I have a 500GB HD, Nvidia GTX-660 card, M-audio 1010lt soundcard (it detects the realtek from the motherboard but I disabled it), 2 GB RAM, Intel i3 processor. I have a WD external drive via USB.
I haven't installed any driver whatsoever, it's a clean install.

    I appreciate your inputs.

I forgot to mention that when the freeze occurs, I can actually move the mouse cursor. But that's it.

My guess: NVIDIA driver a/o configuration problems. Which driver are you using?

There are so many threads on here citing issues with the upgrade from 14.04 and earlier versions to 16.04 that it really shouldn't have been listed as a viable (and supported) option. With 16.04 using a much newer kernel, and especially with the upgrade from KDE 4 to Plasma 5, the issues have been numerous. I've experienced this myself first-hand on two different computers. I think there are many issues, from video drivers (mentioned above), to KDE 4 config files that are no longer relevant (and possibly borked), that I could not with a clear conscious recommend going the upgrade route to anybody. IMHO, wiping the HD and doing a fresh install is the only clear path to a (hopefully) hassle-free experience. Add the fact that you are duel-booting to the mix and you potentially decrease the likelihood of a successful upgrade even more so.

Also, IHMO it's a good idea to unplug any unnecessary devices during an install / upgrade. Printers, USB keys, USM HD's, etc. Always a small chance they can mess up the install or cause general headaches, and having them plugged in during install doesn't really accomplish anything.

This is more of a general observation that a direct answer to your post, but I feel pretty strongly on the subject, so I'm posing there for posterity's sake.

As posted above, random UI freezes are often caused by graphics card issues, and I would start there in my troubleshooting checklist.

          Adding to your list:
          1) do NOT install using a wireless connection! Stretch a cat5 or better cable to your box from your router, if only for the install.
          2) do NOT choose the option to download and install updates or drivers during the install. Wait until you've completed the install and have booted into it normally. THEN, do the "sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade" to bring down the latest updates,
          3) Then plug in your printer, USB hub, or other peripherals, followed by "sudo ubuntu-drivers" to find alternate (proprietary) drivers for your video and other devices.
          4) After you've installed all your additional apps and configured them to your liking, take a snapshot (btrfs, if your using it) or make a full system clone (clonezilla).
          5) THEN install backed up data, old emails, non-repository packages, etc....

          Debugging and install vs reinstalling:
If you think, after preliminary investigations or asking questions here on this forum, that it will take you more than three hours, OR, it already has taken you more than three hours, to solve a problem, it will be a lot easier to reinstall from scratch than fix a busted system. My installation usually takes 20-30 minutes. Adding back my settings and additional apps and data usually takes no more than 1 to 2 hours. So, worse case mode, three hours to "FIX" a bad problem.

IF you have to re-install two or three or more times from the same LiveXXX, that has been checksummed, to get a working installation then you are doing something wrong ... repeatedly. Keep written notes about each step and what your choose.

            Some information from command line:

            Code:

I'm not an expert on linux, but why does that line says "width:64 bits"? does it mean I'm using a 64b driver?

The kubuntu I installed is 32b:

Thanks for the tip, but I'm connected with a cable (I have a PC).

            2) do NOT choose the option to download and install updates or drivers during the install. Wait until you've completed the install and have booted into it normally. THEN, do the "sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade" to bring down the latest updates,
Well, my bad. I clicked the option to download drivers during install... :-( As I mentioned before, I haven't installed anything myself, all this was installed by default by the installer.

IMHO, wiping the HD and doing a fresh install is the only clear path to a (hopefully) hassle-free experience. Add the fact that you are duel-booting to the mix and you potentially decrease the likelihood of a successful upgrade even more so.
I had issues during upgrade... that's why I opted to wipe the partition and reinstall using a usb stick. It is a fresh install.
I have used dual boot for years, never had issues with it.
In previous kubuntu versions I always used the nvidia drivers (manual install). Never had problems.

So, you guys recommend to reinstall everything and choosing not to download drivers during install? I'm scared I'll end up damaging my hard disk with all these "hard reboots".
            My music!

              Rebooting doesn't damage your HD.
64b is the bandwidth of your GPU.

Using the reset button won't damage my HD??

Well, I'm in south America but for some reason after reinstalling the time in Windows is messed up (even though it's fine in BIOS). I'll fix that later.

Na. My box is as old as yours (2010) and in my many experiments I have been forced to hit the power button more than once to regain control. Power button, shutdown, reboot ... all pretty much the same. It is true that a cold boot or a power off are the two times that the most stress is put on circuitry ... current and voltage spikes ... but except for really cheap computers that do not design to more than twice the voltage and current ratings of their components, hitting the power button to start up or shut down a computer won't hurt the HD, or anything else. It may, however, corrupt the data written on the drive if the data was in the process of being written when the power button was hit. But, even then, OS's usually detect such power downs and land the HD rw heads smoothly.

Big continent. How stable is the voltage on your power line? Do you filter it? Voltage spikes on the power line may be a bigger source of problems than just turning your computer off by the powere button instead of clicking on the desktop power off button.

You have a similar CPU to mine, which is an Intel i3-370M. Yours is an Intel i3-533, which is also a dual core, 4 thread, 64bit processor. Why did you install the 32b version of Kubuntu? It's like disconnecting three spark pulgs on an eight cylinder engine!

What I was looking for was a second display unit. When a laptop with an intel CPU and mobo has a NVIDIA display chip it is usually the second chip, an Intel "Integrated Graphics Controller Chip" (HD, HD3000, HD4000, etc...) being the first. Apparently not in your case. Perhaps your BIOS has a setting which allows you to switch between an internal Intel display chip and the NVIDIA? If so, then the BumbleBee apps would be necessary. Otherwise, you'll have to locate an NVIDA driver for your GTX660. I've never had an NVIDIA graphics chip and have no experience installing them or setting them up. Oshunluver and some other do, however. Maybe they will chime in with some expert advice. Meanwhile, I'd recommend that you download the latest point release of Kubuntu 64b and install it.

                    Ok I'll take your word.

Big continent. How stable is the voltage on your power line? Do you filter it? Voltage spikes on the power line may be a bigger source of problems than just turning your computer off by the powere button instead of clicking on the desktop power off button.
Unfortunately I live in Venezuela. Big energy problems.
I only have an APC BackUPS ES 550VA 120V between the PC and the wall.

Wait, with 2 GB RAM is it advisable to install 64-b? I thought it was only worth with > 4GB...
On the same subject, I work with many music/audio applications (jackd, carla, Ardour, Hydrogen, etc, etc). And my M-Audio soundcard (I have an external keyboard connected to it), will they perform well?
I never had a 64b system before. But if you think it's worth I can give it a try. This is a learning process for me.

My motherboard has an integrated graphic card, but I disabled it in BIOS. I always use the Nvidia. In 14.04 I had it enabled but it always appeared in my device list so I disabled it.
By the way in my Audio devices right after installing I saw "GK106 HDMI Audio controller Digital Stereo (HDMI)". I suppose this comes with the Nvidia card but since I want to use my Maudio card I disabled it (In Kubuntu, not in BIOS). It is the only "tweak" I've done after installing. I guess the less devices I see, the simplier it gets.
I'll start downloading Kubuntu 64b. Let me know if you have another observation, I really appreciate it.

I forgot to mention, in my display properties I have:

I'm aware of that. I have a friend who is married to a lady from Venezuela and she says that her family members have lost considerable weight because of the food shortages.

The APC usually has only enough power to keep the desktop running for 5-15 minutes, just long enough to do do a graceful power off. I used to own an APC when I was running a Sony VAIO desktop. I used it for about a year and on the day I really needed it, when our power was interrupted by a drunk hitting the transformer, the APC failed. It's battery was bad despite my frequent testing by pushing the test button.

The "4GB" is the maximum a memory a 32b OS could use (at one time. I don't know if that is still a limitation, but I do know that to use more than 4GB of RAM you need to use the 64b OS. The system requirements for K/Ubuntu 16.04 are:

Your 2GB is enough to run the 64b Kubuntu. I have 8GB of RAM and I rarely see more than 1.1GB being used. When you install it create at least a 3GB Swap file so that hibernate will work, if you use hibernate.

                      That's what I thought.
I had an Acer with an Intel graphic chip and a secondary NVIDIA chip but my BIOS would not allow me to disable the Intel, so I had to use the BumbleBee app and its "optimus" driver.

Yes, that's true I have lost about 4 kilos this year. I mean, we're not starving in my home.. I have a good job and still can provide for my family, which makes me a "privileged person" (others are not so lucky). However I've had to restrict non essential meals (cookies, desserts and such).
Well, luckily in the area I live we rarely have power outages, because I live in front of a clinic. But I'm not sure about the "quality" of the electricity (sudden increase/decrease of power, etc).

When I bought mine (about 2 yrs ago) it would run for >20 min. Today it can run for 5-7 min. But that's fine. I'm always at home when the computer is on.

Alright. I'm downloading the file now (will be downloaded tomorrow.. it is late and I only have a 1 Mbps ADSL), and will try to reinstall without the option of automatically downloading the drivers.
Then I will install the driver from here (never had problems with these drivers):
                        http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html

I'll let you know the results. Thanks.

Well, looks like 64-b is not for me..
I tried installing first without clicking "download updates while installing"... All I got was a black screen after rebooting, and a kernel panic after a second reboot. This last screen mentioned something about "/init" not working.

Then I tried clicking on "download updates...", but with the same result.

Tonight I will try again 32-b, but without downloading updates. It is the only option I haven't tried (and despite the freezes, it worked better than 64-b, since at least I could login to my account).

No... do you mean with the Kubuntu installer?
I tested the disk, though, as it was one of the options in the installer.
