Is there a way to be rid of the 'dashboard tab'?

This is the 'Toolbox', also known as a Hamburger

In Plasma 5.3 it's realy easy:
Right click the desktop select Desktop Settings and then Tweaks.
Uncheck the toolbox.

On older versions you have to install a special widget called the 'Stealth Cashew', it has a transparency setting where you can specify how much you see.
