    Plasma went BLACK

    Hi,

I upgraded to kubuntu 15.04 from 14.10 and it worked just fine.
Then removed some out comment rows in etc/apt/sources.list. When saving the changes plasma krasched.
The screen went black. Luckily I still have Docky running so I can access most of the computer. But the screen is still black after reboot. My four virtual desktops are black, but they are still there. The Kubunu menu is not available.
But most applications seems to run anyway.

Anyone have any idea on how to get Plasma to run properly again?

Does alt-f2 bring up krunner? If so, type

    plasmashell

      Hi claydoh

alt-f2 brings up krunner, but nothing I type there gives any response.
And if I click on the setting button on the left side of the krunner box, krunner stops.

by the way I did reenter the comments in sources.list

          Fixed it!

          This did it:

          Code:
I too had the same problem in the fresh install of kubuntu 15.04 64 bit.

Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 after the system has started
System will prompt to login give your login name and press enter

              Enter the password

              mv ~/.kde ~/.kde.old
              mv ~/.cache ~/.cache.old
              shutdown -r now

            Why does Plasma go down?

            Hi!
I think that plasma went down because I ran Dolphin as root, and/or I tried to edit Program launcher (tried to add "Minecraft"-game).
It all went black and I did not know what to do, so I reinstalled Kubuntu twice! At last I found the solution as I posted above.

Anyone else had this experience! And how did you solve this, is this a bug?

I got excatly the same problem.
I first upgrade from 14.10. After the 1st reboot (I change the fstab file), plasma went black and resolution has changed to a dirty 1024x768 or something like that (alt+F2 brigns the krunner, but do nothing).
Hopefully, I got firefox in autostart, so I was able to launch dolphin (using the download tab) and delete the files (not the folders) in ~/.cache (I also tried to delete folders..).
I reboot, and everything was ok.

Strange, but it seems to fix the problem... temporally.

Because, the thing is, each time I rebooted, plasma went black. It wasn't loading.
(I tried failsafe at login screen, but it just brings the same login screen without no change)
So I decided to wipe the partition and make a fresh install.
But exactly the same problem came!!
I wiped and reinstalled 3 times, but always the same. Even when I did absolutly no modifications, no install, nothing.
I also tried to install plasma 5.3, but still the same.
Plasmashell, plasmadesktop, etc... i tried a lot of thing, but i was unable to start the desktop.

So I just came back with 14.10, and everything is fine.
But it would be great to know what's happen to us.
              Very strange...

ps: just in case, I'm with a ATI Radeon HD4xxx.

                Hi

I had exactly the same problem, black screen, no panel or K button to launch anything.

But I did still my shortcut to open the terminal, so from there I removed the ~/.cache and ~/.config folders, then after a reboot everything was OK, except I had to re-setup the desktop settings and the panel, both of which had gone back to the default settings.

                Hope that helps

                Sam

When I delete cache and config, it works. But when I start the computer the next day, it goes back black.

hello i have the same problem, after a while, maybe after the update of the system, at the next restart the desktop is black. I can see the mouse cursor, and if i press alt + F2 the box goes down, but it does not work, everything i write in it, does not work. So the system is not usable.
I reinstalled the system several times, but this problem is a constant. It appears every time

maybe is a video problem? i have a AMD Radeon HD 7800

Hi! 'Upgraded' from 14.10 to 15.04 64-bit. Starts and shows login-screen then K-symbol. Advances 90% with musical 'bong' then stalls for ever; no activity and unusable now. Have I lost everything?

Running Dolphin as root has caused many problems as it is possible to inadvertently change file ownership from the user to root...

Often you can fix them by this command:
                          Code:
                          $ sudo chown -R user:user /home/
                          user is your user name.

This will not be the solution for all!

jeffjohn, no you probably didn't lose all, especially when you set up a separate /home partition you can try a reinstall where you don't format that /home.
In case of an upgrade without a separate /home you could boot into a Live disk or USB and then copy all goodies off the /home directory to an external drive.
