Kde Desktop will not start once nvidia drivers are configured.

Clean install of Kubuntu 15.04 on new system.
Installation went well with no issues.
After installation, used the driver manager to switch from the nouveau to the currently recommended proprietary nvidia driver.
It all seemed to install properly, but, after logout/login, the desktop is black, only showing the mouse.

Failsafe login does nothing - you select failsafe, enter your password, click login, just to see the screen flash and you are back at the login screen.

I switched to the console (ctrl-alt-f2) and logged in there without difficulty. I then used apt-get to install the mate desktop environment. Mate desktop environment is working fine with the proprietary nvidia drivers, but, kde/plasma will not even start.

Any suggestions on how I can get kde working with the recommended nvidia proprietary drivers?

At least I can log in but the user experience is a POSH.
Nouveau works reasonably well so I can live without nVidia and as this is an Optimus laptop I could even move to Intel.

Right now I'm installing the nVidia 340 version, 346 is the recommended.

    Will be back with more...

Ah well, same issues with 340, the first minute or so all works well, then the hotkeys fail and conky crashes.

      I'll give 304 a try.
Though I vaguely remember that had issues with my card...

It starts to look like nVidia ver. 304 does not cause the problems I have with 340 and 346.
I can now edit the Global short cuts and they remain accessible and conky has not crashed.
So far I haven't seen a downside to it.

            Nvidia Driver 346.59
            Linux-x86_64
            GeForce GTX 650Ti card
            Dual Display /DVI

Standard install, only change from base install is using the proprietary driver.

Switching to Nvidia Driver 304 allows me to log in. I don't know if other issues are created by using the older driver.

This is a Thinkpad W520 laptop including an external monitor.
No bumblebee (at the moment), yes I have dkms.

Good to see Dalton managed to log in with 304.
                I've done a bug report:

Back to the Nouveau driver after updating to kde plasma 5.3.
The 304 driver/plasma crashes on login before the desktop appears.

Nvidia Proprietary drivers are of no value in kubuntu 15.04

At least have a working system with nVidia 304 and yes, also Plasma 5.3.
I'll do some more experimenting with other nVidia drivers.

One of the worst bugs for me is that the Dolphin root actions don't work, also there's a problem with the Dolphin search, it will only search IN files, not for names.
But those are for another thread.

Neither of the two nvidia 'additional drivers' work. Also the latest download from geforce- 349.16 kaput. After three reinstalls, I'm over nvidia. I'm sticking to nouveau until it's fixed
