    need working video player

Need a video player that works.

Have a bunch of *.mp4 video files. When I click on the files in Dolphin, Dragon player opens and I get the audio, bit no video. It raises an error box that it needs an additional plugin.

Is there a working video player on Linux??

Without much to go on, you probably need to install the kubuntu-restricted-extras package, which the Kubuntu installer asks you at the time of install. mp4 files are a proprietary format and you need to agree to a licensing agreement to use them, just like .mp3's and other non-free formats.

    From Wikipedia:
    Code:
[COLOR=#252525][FONT=sans-serif]M4P is a protected format which employs [/FONT][/COLOR][URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management"]DRM[/URL][COLOR=#252525][FONT=sans-serif] technology to restrict copying. MPEG-4 Part 14 (formally [/FONT][/COLOR][B][URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Organization_for_Standardization"]ISO[/URL]/[URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Electrotechnical_Commission"]IEC[/URL] 14496-14:2003) is a standard specified as a part of [URL="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4"]MPEG-4[/URL].[/B]
For further important reading, including playing commercial DVDs, see: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats. If you already have the required meta-package installed, we can drill down and help further.

For the 14.10 you could use the 14.04 guide: http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Kubuntu_Trusty

Kaffeine for Utopic should work fine. You might try it, it doesn't take long to test it. Use Muon, if you wish, to install it. Along with kubuntu-restricted-extras (also at Muon Package Manager).

I also hear good things about VLC Player. You might install both Kaffeine and VLC, they should show up under K > Applications > Multimedia, and you'd have both to choose from.

VLC is an great all-around media player on any platform. But, back on topic: Dragon Player, the default in Kubuntu, will play mp4 files just fine, as long as the required codecs are installed.

Yes, I agree, I forgot about the Dragon Player issue -- installing the codecs should fix the sound issue.
geezer, did installing kubuntu-restricted-extras fix your Dragon Player?

The Hot New Thing in video players right now is MPV. It's already included in Vivid; you'll need a PPA to get newish builds for Utopic and Trusty. The version in the PPA is statically linked with FFMPEG libraries, too,

A good GUI front end is SMPlayer. The version in the repositories is old; obtain the current build from this PPA.

MPV looks really good! Hope someone provides at Qt front end for it - that would be amazing.

Also worth noting is the new release of VLC - The 2.2.0 release announcement is here. The VLC 2.2.0 Stable Branch PPA for Utopic and Vivid is available via the official Videolan PPA.

Perhaps it would be worth making a Kubuntu Media Players News and Updates sticky thread?

                    That would be SMPlayer

Yeah, good idea, to raise awareness of MPV.

Although VLC handles a larger number of odd formats I've always preferred Smplayer because of it's better keyboard shortcuts.
MPV seems to have the same advantages as Smplayer + a prettier interface.
