    Screens Stop Updating

I've been having this problem with increasing regularity where the screen stops responding.
The mouse still moves, and cursors change based on what their hovering over however nothing updates. You can click on things and hear they are working but nothing changes on the screen.
When dropping to a CLI both monitors shut off from no input signal. Trying to get back to GUI results in nothing happening.
If there are any logs I can dump let me know.
    14.10
i7 3820QM with Bumblebee for the 680M. Everything runs off of the HD4000.

Happened again today. The only way out of it is a hard reset.

                Nice rig!

You have two monitors hooked up?
When dropping to a CLI both monitors shut off from no input signal.
Does this freezing happen if you have the external monitor completely disconnected?

Thanks, it does a pretty good job, if a bit heavy.
I haven't used just the built in display in so long now I cannot remember. I'll try it out with just the main display and see if it still happens.
I did notice this started to happen after the upgrade to 14.10. I shrugged it off as a hiccup then as it was a once in a blue moon issue.

It seems stable without the second display. However my workflow has suffered quite a bit due to having one display. Where would I start in fixing this issue so that I can use multiple displays again?

What happens if you disable Bumblebee and configure your firmware to use only the nVidia graphics? I'm suggesting this only as a way to try to narrow down the range of possible problems.

If I disable Bumblebee both cards come on at the same time and fight over which one gets to render.

Heh, I see you noticed my original post where I asked for those commands. That was before I noticed that you indicated you were running Bumblebee. BTW, those outputs don't have anything unusual.

On (most) ThinkPads, there's a firmware option for disabling switchable graphics and using only Intel or only nVidia. If your laptop's firmware has something similar, try disabling switchable and using only the nVidia. The idea here is to try to eliminate variables and see if we can narrow down the circumstances under which the problem exhibits itself.

Went through the BIOS, it'll let me overclock the card, but it won't let me force the machine to use a specific card.
So happy my T420 doesn't have the discrete graphics option, makes life much simpler on that machine.

Do you know how to use blacklist files in /etc/modprobe.d? If so you can blacklist the i915 module, which will prevent the Intel graphics from working, thus effectively going nVidia only.

                              Code:
                              echo "blacklist i915" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf

                              sudo update-initramfs -u -k all
                              Then reboot.
