    Neon removes Kubuntu-desktop

Now the Neon repo for 14.04 has been removed I was going to install the same on 14.10

Upon logging in on the new Neon Plasma I noticed it was the only available option...
So I tried to reinstall the Kubuntu-desktop which was impossible due to unolved dependencies.

Regretfully I did not carefully read what packages were going to be removed, Kubuntu-desktop was one of them...

Because Neon-Plasma is a work in progress I followed the recommended steps to remove it and surprise parts of the desktop showed up again.
Next I reinstalled Kubuntu-desktop and superficially all looks good again.

Superficially because certain Plasma5 icons have remained.
Worse is my vertical System Tray now has only a single row of large icons instead of the previous two rows with small icons.
I found some year old posts about similar, it seems to be a recurring problem when reinstalling the task bar etc.

After creating a new user I new user I see that desktop is OK.

    But what to do next/

Hmmmm, now I read this page on kubuntu.org that specifies exactly what I saw:
    Install Plasma 5 on 14.10
You can install Plasma 5 on a 14.10 install - it will remove your stable software.
Ensure you have no unsaved work then in a console run:
Ah well, I'll do a reinstall

A fresh install, all back up.

Keeping a log of the usual tweaks big and small pays off
