Upgrade from 14.04 - 14.10 failed. HELP Please!

    Hello,
Been a Kubuntu user for years. Love the OS. Have a desktop. AMD 64 bit quad core processor, 8 gigs of DDR3 ram, Asus motherboard, Nvidia 550TI graphics card, plenty of HDD space, Dual boot with windows 7. Been upgrading between version of Kubuntu with only minor issues since 2011. Example when I upgraded from 13.10 to 14.04 I had to reinstall my Nvidia graphic driver manually (no big deal). But I figured since according to the Ubuntu Wiki, that the final for 14.10 was like 2 days awat, I decided to upgrade. So to avaoid the download rush since essentially what is up there is the final now, again I decided to upgrade. Usually I upgrade my Kubuntu a couple of days before the final anyway before the rush. I did that with 14.04, 13.10, 13.04 etc. No real issues. Now this time during the upgrade, things started failing. I would get error code 1's right and left and eventually the Kubuntu upgrader froze. so I force closed the dpg. I mean it froze like the upgrader was stuck on a black screen eating up tons of memory. I did the sudo dpkg -a as it recommended, no go. I then did a sudo apt-get -f install to no avail. Tried sudo apt-get clean, Sudo apt-get -f install, and tried a sudo apt-get-f upgrade all with the same output below. The upgrade was at like 63% when it froze and I killed it. When I start the upgrade process again it says all is upgraded but this is what I get from the apt-get -f install

This isn't all of it but a good bit of the output. It is allot so I am trimming and I can't scroll up enough to get the beginning.

I know that is allot and that isn't all of it and I deleted the duplicate lines.

Please if anybody knows how to salvage this install that would be great. Worst case and if there is no other way I can back up my home directory, then reinstall 14.04.1 and then upgrade from there.

Thanks for everyone that replies. Kubuntu is my favorite flavor of Linux. KDE is my favorite Linux desktop, and unfortianately i still need to dual boot to Windows for some stuff but I am hardly in it.

I hope I get this fixed soon, In the mean time I am not rebooting or nothing.

    Thanks again.

IF all the packages had downloaded before it froze and IF you had not done the "sudo apt-get clean" ,,, I may have had some suggestions ,,,,,,,,,BUT ,,,,,,,,,,all I see now is a reinstall.
the "clean" removed all the downloaded packages ,,,so thay can not be installed/unpacked/configured now

I will suggest an idea for the freeze ,,,,,,,,, this was a lot of packages to download and unpack if you ran out of space in / it would freeze .
before doing any release upgrades you should make sure you have a few Gigs of space free .

NOW some one elce may be able to tell you how to make dpkg forget it already did the "do-release-upgrade" ,,,,,,,,so you can rerun it ,,,,but I dont know.

With an interrupted package install/upgrade scenario, these are the steps to help fix things:
sudo dpkg --configure -a to finish the interrupted package installs and configurations
      followed by
sudo apt-get update to refresh package lists
Then sudo apt-get -f install to make sure nothing is missing
followed by the normal sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Any errors shown should help point to any fixes needed

Just for fun, you can get a prettier terminal output now in 14.10 using
      sudo apt update
      and
      sudo apt full-upgrade

Thanks for all the replies. I figured it out. it was one of the services. Specifically pwrstatd which i temporarily moved and all went well. I still get this every so often now that i have moved that service back after the upgrade. insserv: warning: script 'pwrstatd' missing LSB tags and overrides but things work. until I stupidly decided to upgrade to KDE5 as a friend whom has Arch Upgraded and said he has no major issues and loves it over KDE4. Well despite possible Kubuntu specific bug reports, I did the kde Next thing to epic fail. Basically with Lighdm I just got a cursor and no background. Seams to be a Kubuntu bug? So I reverted back, and deleted all the kde 5.0 and plasma 5.1 stuff and reinstalled Kubuntu desktop and kubuntu desktop full, Had to reinstall some apps like system settings manually, and had to backup and redo my kwin RC but i am back in KDE4. I guess I'll just have to wait until Kubuntu says KDE5/Plasma5 is more stable enough that whatever bug i experienced won't happen. My friend on Arch is bummed for me. He says KDE4 is better than anything else so you are ok for now but KDE5 is better than 4. Yes he thinks it probably will not be stable till 5.2 at least in the plasma front and 5.1 or 2 in the KDE front based on KDE history, but who knows. I do wish it would work. oh well.

Again thanks for everyone that replied.

Any help or suggestions on when you think i could try the KDE5 again? Or even skip the tech preview and wait till which i assume will be 15.04 Vervet when KD% becomes main stream that 4 will not be offered? Thanks again.

          Hello,

i think i got the same error like you, but without upgrading to kde 5. Could you tell me a little bit more detailed what you have done to fix the problem ?

Could you tell what you meant with moving pwrstatd, because i can't find it.

          thx

Which error? You are referring to the loading of just the background with a cursor after lightdm loads? Mine was related to KD5 specific. downgrading back to KED4 deleting all KDE next repos and what installed with it, KDE5 and Plasma 5 stuff, reinstalling my Nvidia drivers and redoing my KiwnRC file by backing it up and letting it regenerate fix my issue. I never had that issue in KDE4. If you are referring to a different issue I posted about, let me know and i will answer with a more depth detailed description of what i did.
