Kate won't automatically select file extension txt

I am using Kate to save some text files (newly created), and I cannot find a setting to enable "automatically select file extension" for txt.
It is grayed out, and oddly it will activate for other file types. I scoured Google but could not find an answer and nothing in the manual either.
What on Earth am I doing wrong?
    Kubuntu 18.04.3 LTS -- KDE 5.12.9

You don't need to use a file extension for text files.

One way is to right click on the text file to open the context menu. Click on Open With then click on Other. It will bring up a menu list of all programs. At the bottom there is a checkbox that says Remember Application Association, click on that box then select Kate. After that all text files will open with Kate. Hope that helps.
