    Tips re Skype?

In 14.04, just can't seem to get Skype working. Enabled partner repositories, got the Skype installed from Muon there, tested webcam with Cheese, installed pavucontrol (Palse Audio Volume Control). Spent too much time on this.

Chat (sending typed text) works, but I can't get the webcam sound going, can't pass the Skype "Echo Sound Test Service" call.

    Any pointers?

To get Skype to work, this has worked on my system (Intel DG33) for 12.04 and for 14.04. (I have not tested to see if these settings would affect other multimedia applications.)

        Skype Checklist

Install Cheese, make sure webcam camera is working.

Make sure Pulse Audio Volume Control is installed (you can use Muon): pavucontrol

Check Pulse Audio configuration, as follows:
        K > Applications > Multimedia > Sound(Pulse Audio VolumeControl)

        Input Devices:
-- The webcam, analog mono: Port: microphone; mono 100%
-- Built-in Audio Analog Stereo: Port: (Rear) microphone; Left & Right: 100%

        Output:
        -- Built-in Audio Analog Stereo; Port: Analog Output; L & R: 49%

        Configuration:
-- The webcam; Profile: Analog Mono Input
-- Built-in Audio; Profile: Analog Stereo Duplex

Check System Settings > Multimedia, as follows:

        Audio and Video Settings

        --> Tab: Device Preference

Audio Recording (Communication – Recording – Control)
        -- The webcam
        -- Built-in Audio Analog Stereo

Video Recording: Present in 12.04; but blank in 14.04
        In 12.04:
        Default Video Recording Preference
        /dev/video0
        HD Webcam C525

        --> Tab: Audio Hardware Setup

        Hardware Section
        Sound Card: the webcam
        Profile: Analog Mono Input

        Device Configuration Section
Sound Device: Recording (the webcam details)
        Connector: Microphone

        Input Level Section:
(The meter should respond when speaking into the webcam's microphone)

Re-boot, if necessary to see if changes will take effect better.

I do not know if this helps. But I had similar problem in 14.04 when I installed from Muon. Then I purged it and installed Skype from Skype web site, the one for ubuntu. All became OK and its functioning well.
          Hope this will help.

And, then, that can work the other way, too
The Skype at Muon may beat that at Skype!
I do think that Skype needs to see everything, like your sound setup and such, and so re-booting is always a good idea IF you are having problems.
