Should one use the KDE SC release in this LTS system?

What is the consensus of opinion regarding adding the kde backport in a LTS?
Is it considered a fairly standard move

      OK
      Thanks

There are some that that might deserve clarification as to 'why'.

It is completely up to you. If you want the freshest KDE, you have to use the kubuntu backports ppa, else you don't get a lot of new version of it. In the previous LTS 12.04, there are some pretty big changes between the stock and the current KDE software. However, in 14.04, KDE is is a maintenance mode of sorts, so the changes are smaller, mostly bug fixing, without new and shiny features. This means the chance of regressions and upgrade problems become minimal, so in this current case, I would recommend using backports for most everyone using 14.04 LTS.

I would bet that some of the backports end up in the official updates at some point down the road.
