13.04 upgrade...

I am new to kubuntu/linux so please bare with me, i have a computer with 13.04 installed, tried upgrading but have had nothing but problems, found out should skip the 13.10 upgrade and go furhter, but am wondering if I do a different upgrade from a usb or dvd, is there going to be a way to save all of my files through the upgrade without backing them all up 1st?

The shelf life of 13.04 is long over. You may as well start backing up your files as you'll have to make a clean install of either 14.04 LTS or the latest, 16.04 LTS. Depending on your hardware, 16.04 would probably be better.
