Not a malfunction. The URLs don't exist for Trusty. They do exist for Precise.

You've posted this in the 12.04 (Precise) board. Did you attempt to upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04?

There are no Trusty repos in this ppa. Once you remove this, you might want to run sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to see if there are any other errors or warnings.

The ubuntu-audio-dev ppa you have in your sources simply doesn't exist for 14.04, which is Trusty Tahr. Again, you have posted in 12.04 Precise Pangolin. Did you install 12.04 initially, and recently opted to upgrade to 14.04?

No way this is a fresh install, from the autoremove output (why you did that is a head ) I spy both 12.04 and 14.04 kernels, so I am suspecting as Snowhog does that this is an upgrade. As a note, upgrading disables PPA entries for upgrades, but does NOT re-activate them, that has to be done by the user. Not all PPAs have repos for all versions, and many are outdated or no longer being maintained by the users that set them up, so checking for this is helpful.

I had asked for sudo apt-get dist-upgrade as we need to be sure everything was fully and properly up to date, especially after an *buntu upgrade - running a plain sudo apt-get upgrade does NOT do this.

Sounds as if your overwrite did not that exactly...
If you are not worried about the setup and want to do a fresh install then start over and reformat partitions.

Have you tried updating via the terminal?
                          Code:
                          sudo apt-get update
                          sudo apt-get upgrade
I fixed a problem with a friends muon updater where it wouldn't work properly but once I did the above it automatically fixed itself. I never found what the problem actually was though, but the terminal command did the trick.

Please ignore ... there seems to have been a glitch on the forum or something (I completely missed the first page of replies to this, it just wasn't there before).

This is OK, we were just checking to make sure that there was nothing left to update, which is always a good step to take.

One place i forgot to have you check was with the updater program itself. Run muon update manager - just typing part of that into the search box in the Kmenu will show it. Look for the "More..." button and go to "Configure Muon Update Manager" and see if the notification settings are correct.
