WIFI not working on new laptop

Hello all I just bought a new HP Pavillion 17 laptop and of course I am trying to install Kubuntu on it. I cannot get the wifi to 'turn on' in the menu and recognize the wifi in my house. This is a fresh install on a brand new laptop. I know it is working because if I dual boot back to windows 8 it automatically connects and works no problem.

I also have my HP G42 laptop running kubuntu and it is connected to the wifi automatically with no issues. I just cant seem to get this last hurdle solved though it must be something simple as I know the wifi is working in the laptop and on other devices. Right now I am writing this by plugging the wire directly inthe laptop.

Please help, I want to wipe Windows 8 from here permentaly but need wifi working first.

    Thank you

Hello all, it seems that the update helped the wifi as now I can connect. I also installed the last 2 links you sent me, as the first one wouldn't install. Now I have an issue that the WIFI 'drops or disconnects' after a while... I think it might be VIBER that I installed, though there is no issues with Viber or WIFI on the older laptop running the same OS (Kubuntu LTS)..

          Any ideas?

Your wifi chip should be driven by the rtl8723be.ko driver.
            Code:
            $ locate rtl8723be.ko
            /lib/modules/3.13.0-33-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl8723be/rtl8723be.ko

Hello, thank you for the link. The comments that are shown do not seem to build confidence in the issue. The WIFI is working now but it seems VIBER is causing it to disconnect.

We've seen this problem with Realtek wi-fi before. Try switching the module to use CPU-based encryption rather than encryption in the interface's hardware. Run the follwowing in a console:
                Code:
                echo "options rtl8723be swinc=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf >/dev/null
Now, remove and reload the module:
                Code:
                sudo modprobe -r rtl8723be

                sudo modprobe rtl8723be
                Any improvement?

Hello, it seemed to make it worse. Once I did the terminal commands, it deactivated and now is trying to connect but cannot. It seems it stuck in a cycle.

I needed to plug the wire in now to send this

OK, that idea didn't work! Sorry, Remove the file:

                    Code:
                    sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf
The run the two modprobe commands again.

it seems the same thing is happening, deactivated, then it tries to connect only to fail. Did I do this correctly?

Hello all, I got the wifi working again using:
There are some kernel issues with the Realtek wifi drivers. They are basically, mostly, fixed in kernel 3.16. You would need to install the updated upstream kernel which can be downloaded here: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D Im guessing you want the 64 bit version... http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...1935_amd64.deb http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...031935_all.deb http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa...1935_amd64.deb So you would install those three packages and it should work. I haven't tested 3.16.1 yet. A little curious.
Now my question is I am going to have to live with funny WIFI or is there somehow to fix these wonky drivers? I just spend a chunk of money on this new laptop and feel a little let down about the problems with Realtek. Any ideas?

Everything looks fine in post #11. The only thing I might have suggested is rebooting rather than removing and reloading the modules -- although it's usually sufficient just to do the remove/reload dance.

It seems that the smoothest experience for Linux laptops is to go with as much Intel hardware as possible. In the vast majority of cases, Intel NICs and wi-fi and graphics just work.
