Sound stopped working in Linux. Works in Windows.

It was working yesterday. I have tried rebooting, changing ports, trying other speakers, changing the sound configuration and pretty much everything you would expect someone that has been using computers since 1983 to think of. Why my Windows partition has sound but not my Linux partition is strange to me. Any one have any suggestions?
Just to remind users and devs that Ubuntu and its flavors have a long way to go to be as usr friendly as they should be.

Still not working. Is there some place other than System Settings > Multimedia, that I can check?

''Hey stupid it got muted!' Now I feel like the guy that buys a new TV and calls the TV repairman to find out why it doesn’t work. The repairman goes behind the TV, does something. 'Everything is working that will be $100.' 'What did you do?' 'You forgot to plug it in'. I know, I was having a Homer Simpson moment. Ya that’s the ticket.

Now how come Kubuntu thinks I am using a headphone jack when its the normal speaker out put?

Well, that pretty much says it all. See, if you had been using computers prior to 1983, you would have known to check for muting.

You would think so but some how I didn't think to check that. Then again the the try icon on the klipper doesn’t really show whether its muted or not. It should be greyed out when the sound is muted. As it is its not noticeable. I guess I need to find a new colour scheme for the Klipper.

I still need to figure out why Kubuntu 14.04 thinks I am using the headphones instead of the main speakers.

I'm using the Oxygen Desktop Theme and when KMix is muted it displays a different tray icon.

            When muted:

              How do I get that?

What Desktop Theme and Icon Theme are you using? Again, here, it's Oxygen (Desktop and Icon).
