Only other things I can think of are kubuntu-restricted-extras and kubuntu-restriced-addons
I don't have any problems with either SMplayer or Amarok.

Those were already installed too. The issues started when I upgraded from 13.10. Everything related to Dragon Player, Amarok and SMplayer was working fine.

Edit: Just an update. SMplayer is working, but Amarok and Dragon Player are not.

This is kind of par for the course for anything except:

            xmms
            xmms2
            mplayer
            Amarok.

of course enable any restricted extras.

            stay with what works.

Outside KDE.... the thing with the orange slice...or was that a martini shaken not stirred? Hoghead, Tito's and Lillit.

After adding the webupd8's ppa the current situation is: Amarok still won't work (due to its bug) and Dragon Player plays movie but has no sound. Also, I still have no sound at all for any kde notification or event.

Yes, it's installed. Current installed version is 0.0~git20140324-0ubuntu1.
Do I have to have installed phonon-backend-gstreamer0.10.x as well? (It's not installed)

                    Also make sure you have:
                    gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly
                    gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad
                    gstreamer1.0-libav

All right! gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad was not installed and installing it solved the issues with Amarok, Dragon Player and system sound events. Thank you all!

I used to install a variety of gstreamer packages to get multimedia to work. Now I just install gst123 which installs many of the gstreamer packages. With this, multimedia packages give output including LO Impress with movies.
