After a successful upgrade (everything completed and installer requested a reboot) Kubuntu graphic loads then black screen. After much searching and forum reading I stumbled upon the answer myself. While attempting to execute 'startx' from a cmd line I realized that somehow 'kdm' didn't get installed or was missing. The fix 'sudo apt-get install kdm' then 'reboot'. Poof, all is right in the world.
