Network manager icon shows disconnected over VPN

I recently upgraded to 13.10 from 13.04. Since the my Network Manager sows connected when I connect via wifi, but when I establish my VPN connection it changes to disabled in the task bar. A screen shot can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/73204065@N03/10394770276/

I'm not sure if this is a bug or if there is a fix. Any suggestions?

Yes, the VPN does actually connect and work fine just the task bar icon that is off.
(btw, I updated to a new link for the screenshot)

I've seen an opposite problem since the middle of the summer. Network manager shows a connection but there is none. I had to issue "sudo service networkmanager restart" in a Konsole to restart the connection. This was true for both my wireless and eth connection, so the problem was deeper. I installed a widget (IP Address) and when it switches to "Kein Verbingdun" (german for "no connection") I'd switch to the konsole, up arrow and press the return key. Or, I could wait from 2 to 5 minutes and the connection would re-establish. I upgraded to the 3.3 kernel and that helped. Then I upgraded to the 3.4 kernel through the ppa backports and that helped a lot. And, I think, so did changing my ISP.

Now, NetworkManager continues showing a connection regardless, but the IP Address widget will occasionally switch to showing "no connection" BUT I still have a connection! So, since last Friday at noon, when my new ISP installed the Earthlink cable modem, I've never had to use the "sudo service ..." command.

I confirm this one, seems to be choosing the wrong icon in the new network manager widget.

not sure if this should be bumped upstream to KDE.

Thanks all. I wondered if it was just me or not.
