Bootable USB thats not for Installation purposes

Is it possible to create a bootable USB that's not for Installation purposes? I've googled but keep getting instructions on installation usb's.

You have to create the bootable installer, then install it onto a usb device just like you would if you were putting it on your computer. You would need to make sure you manually partition the device to add swap, root, and (preferably) /home partitions, and that you install the grub bootloader to the usb drive, and not to the mbr of your computer, which is the default. make sure you select sdx and not sdx1 you want grub on the root of the drive. (sub whatever your drive is seen as for the "x".

Then if you set your system to boot first to usb, whenever you have it plugged in, it should boot right up.

    A video tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhgNQ-CWMQU
this is for Ubuntu, but the overall steps will be the same, even if the interface has some differences.

I ran Kubuntu LTS as a stock reference OS on a usb connected hard drive for about a year.
