How start lirc?

Had a very smooth installation of 13.04 from scratch. But how do I start lirc?
/etc/init.d/lirc start does not work
/usr/sbin/lircd does not work
Help would be appreciated

The solution was to manually add the folder /var/run/lirc, and this has to be done after every boot. So I put it in an autostart script.
