    Kernel, dbus upgrade hosed Kubuntu 13.04 desktop/window manager/plasma [?]

Package manager history shows the following for yesterday. Note the timestamp. I did this just before leaving the office for the day. After reboot I had the usual login screen. I left it there:

    Upgraded the following packages:
    dbus (1.4.18-1ubuntu1.3) to 1.4.18-1ubuntu1.4
    dbus-x11 (1.4.18-1ubuntu1.3) to 1.4.18-1ubuntu1.4
    libdbus-1-3 (1.4.18-1ubuntu1.3) to 1.4.18-1ubuntu1.4
    libdbus-1-3:i386 (1.4.18-1ubuntu1.3) to 1.4.18-1ubuntu1.4
    libkdcraw-data (4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1) to 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.2
    libkdcraw20 (4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.1) to 4:4.8.5-0ubuntu0.2
    linux-generic (3.2.0.45.54) to 3.2.0.48.58
    linux-headers-generic (3.2.0.45.54) to 3.2.0.48.58
    linux-image-generic (3.2.0.45.54) to 3.2.0.48.58
    linux-libc-dev (3.2.0-45.70) to 3.2.0-48.74

    Installed the following packages:
    dosemu (1.4.0+svn.2010-1)
    linux-headers-3.2.0-48 (3.2.0-48.74)
    linux-headers-3.2.0-48-generic (3.2.0-48.74)
    linux-image-3.2.0-48-generic (3.2.0-48.74)

This morning on login, I saw what the attached image shows (taken with iPhone).

That, of course, is completely useless. Note that some on-boot apps loaded and their primary window content displayed but the window decorations were not displayed correctly. I think plasma was somehow hosed, but DIIK how that should happen when so few updates were installed and none of them seem relevant to what I see. Restarting KDM and logging in with Kubutu-Failsafe shows same problem. Installing OpenBox and restarting KDM and logging in with Kubuntu-OpenBox shows the same thing. Kubuntu is effectively useless right now. Crtl-Alt-F1 got a terminal and I was able to install XFCE and that's what I'm using right now.

Short of nuking the .kde directory does anyone have any clue where I should look or how to t-shoot this? I can fiddle with files from XFCE but cannot do anything from a kubuntu login at all.

    Thanks.

Oops, just noticed that image is upside down (the Acer logo is the clue). But even right side up it is unusuable.

P.S. I'm a dope. Forgot to give specifics and I fumbled-fingered the post title.

This is Kubuntu *12.04* installed two months ago and running fine.
