WWAN, sierra wireless, HP dm1-4310nr notebook, no device created

The notebook has a WWAN module that shows itself in lsusb as -

Sierra Wireless Inc, HP hs2434 Mobile Broadband Module

but no device is getting attached. No /dev/ttyUSB* files are created. I tried modprobe sierra and it loads also the usb_wwan module but no devices are created.
also tried the qcserial module and again, no devices are created.

The SIM card is activated and works ( verified in a phone) and installed into the notebook correctly.
