As I seem utterly unable either to get Synaptic (forget Muon - as usual it's baffled) to recognized my new 12.10 ISO DVD as a software source, I am now trying to do an upgrade for 12.4 to 12.10 directly from an ISO file on my HD. I can find command instructions for doing this with earlier versions of KB, via Google. BUT, they all use the "alternate" ISO. That exists no longer.
So, with the new one-ISO system, what do I do?
I've tried mounting the DVD (that's in my USB optical drive) using the command line instructions that I found on two blogs -
To upgrade with the alternate disk (change iso path and name)

sudo mount -o loop ~/Desktop/ubuntu-10.04-alternate-i386.iso /media/cdrom0
Didn't work. I'm no KB linux guru - just don't have the time, so I'm again completely stuck.
Any ideas how to upgrade 12.04 to 12.10 via an ISO - either on one's HD or burned to a DVD ('cause this should be faster for my 3 boxes - I think).
All suggestions will be appreciated.
