    VM Won't See Drives

[ABANDONED] I'm running 12.04, with VMware Player 5.01 installed and a Windows 7 VM. For reasons I cannot figure out, the VM has stopped seeing any of the hard drives (other than its own C drive). When I click on "Virtual Machine" in the WIndows 7 title bar and then on "Removable Devices," it shows all of the hard drives as already connected, but Windows Explorer does not see them. Finally, although the devices are ostensibly connected to the VM, the Linux installation still sees them.

Here are the things I've tried:
Rebooting (It is WIndows, after all)
Restarting 12.04 (even though it's not Windows) and then restarting Windows
    Reinstalling VMware Tools
Copying another Windows 7 VM from another computer. The machine copied over properly, but could not see the hard drives. On the computer it works just fine.
    Uninstalling and reinstalling VMware Player.

I'm at my wits' ends (not that it's a particularly long trip to get there). Does anyone have ideas about what I might try next? Are their file contents that it would help to be able to see?

    Many thanks.
