Well, either I'm not explaining myself well enough or you're not understanding.
If you select Current Folder under Apply View Properties, the Details view defaults to only name, size, and date - period. The only way to keep the Details view settings with more information than that and have it applied to multiple folders is select All Folders under Apply View Properties. Then, every folder displays the Details View, which isn't what I want.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Have Dolphin set for Current Folder under Apply View Properties.
2. Select a folder using Icon View.
3. Change to Details View.
4. Right click on Dolphin and add any number of columns to Details View.
5. Change to Icon View.
6. Change back to Details View.
7. Observe Details View has reverted to only name, size and date.
What I want is to be able to keep Apply View Properties set at Current Folder, keep Icon View as my usual view, but when I select Details View - the Details View displays the information I want and in the order I want - not the default of only name, size, and date.
As far as I can find there is no way to make dolphin show anything in Details view by default other than only name, size, and date - unless I manually go through every folder on every hard drive and choose which view I want for each folder - which is impossible since I have a total of 6TB of data I regularly access. Not to mention, as soon as I change to Icon view, when you change back to Details view it resets itself to the default of only name, size, and date.
Does this make it clearer?
For example: I have 13,000+ songs in folders by Artist and then by Album Title. I wish to view to Artist and Album folders in Icon View mode, but I want to view Song Titles (within the Album folder) with Details View and I want to see Name, Type, Size, Date, Owner Group, and Permissions and in that order. I either have to go through all 900+ Album folders and apply the above settings individually to each one or I must set the Apply View Properties to All Folders and then switch from Icon to Details view each time I enter or exit an Album folder. Multiply that by 100's of movie folders and 1000's of photo folders and you might begin to see my issue.Last edited by oshunluvr; Jul 29, 2012, 01:59 PM.

Apologies for missing the point here. I thought you wanted an icon view for the most part across all folders, except on the occassions when you wanted to display a detail view with either some or all of the '6' optional data types you might need.
FYI, you can initially set different view modes on a folder by folder basis, then likewise, set shown datatypes in details view also on a per folder basis. So different datatypes for different folders, and only when switching to detail view from icon mode, or if you prefer, set different view modes folder to folder.
I can't see how a combination of these could not fit your needs. But if not, good luck with your further search

Okay, that did give the results you describe. But of course, now what ever view I select stays that way until I de-select it. What I really want is my cake and to eat it
I like the separate view for each folder, but then I can't control the details view universally.
I guess I'll have to settle for one or the other unless I can find where that default settings is stored.
Thanks for the replies.

Using KDE 4.9 in 12.10, my selections for Details View mode stick after switching view modes, even after closing Dolphin. Will have to check on my 12.04/KDE 4.8

Dolphin Details View - Can I set the defaults?
I have been trying to figure out how to make the view settings for details view in dolphin to stay where I set them.
My normal use is icon view, but occasionally I need the details view so I can sort by something other than name or see more file information.
However, the default details view contains very little in the way of details. I want the default to have all the file info, not just name and date.
I've been through every rc and xml file I can find related to dolphin with no joy. The dolphin view mode preferences contains only icon size and font - practically useless. The official wiki page is out of date as it list an option for expandable folders under view modes > details that doesn't even exist.
To be clear; I don't want details view to be my default view - I want details view to default to fully populated with all available file data. Currently I have to right click and select 6 things to get this each time I open a new folder, which is rather annoying.
I was hoping someone knew a solution before I bother the developer.Tags: None
